From evening sketches to a diploma portfolio
Maya joined the Yacht Design Studio Intensive in 2023, then enrolled on the diploma the following autumn.
Maya arrived wanting a trailerable daysailer with standing headroom that her site measurements could not support. Tutors asked her to choose between headroom and trailering width before any decorative cabin work began.
During the diploma year she rebuilt the concept around a lower cabin profile, fairer buttocks, and a stability discussion tied to a realistic crew loading. Her final portfolio included a marked lines plan, a simple hydrostatic summary, and arrangement sheets annotated with visit measurements from a Midlands museum craft.
She now assists a small leisure-craft designer two days a week while continuing mentoring sessions on structural notes for a plywood prototype.
